A balance disorder is a condition that makes you feel unsteady or dizzy, as if you are moving or spinning, even though you are standing still or lying down. Balance disorders can be caused by a problem in the inner ear or the brain, medications, or certain medical diagnoses. Physical therapy can help address many of these issues related to vertigo and balance disorders.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) is a common inner ear issue affecting the vestibular system and causes the feeling a spinning with position changes typically lying down or rolling over. It is caused when pieces of naturally occurring calcium carbonate material in one area of the inner ear breaks off and moves into another part of the inner ear called the semi-circular canals. These tiny crystals stimulate nerve endings when moving or turning your head and cause the sensation of spinning or dizziness.
BPPV can be evaluated and treated in physical therapy with a series of maneuvers to re-position these crystals.
Other common symptoms that can be helped with Vestibular Rehabilitation include:
• Neck tightness, stiffness, and/or pain
• Generalized “wooziness and foggy head” feelings
• Frequent falls
• Imbalance or the need to hold onto objects when walking
